Fresh baked goods are at the heart of Matakana’s newest Cafe, Ringawera, now based at the Morris & James courtyard. A Waikehe Island favorite, the cafe has moved location along with it’s owner Patrick Griffiths who was seeking a new challenge.
Ringawera is aptly translated as ‘hot hands’, which couldn’t be more fitting for a cafe stationed next to a working pottery.
Patrick bakes from scratch using only quality ingredients with no additives or preservatives and organic where possible. Pop in at 9am to grab something still warm from the oven, such as Patrick’s ‘Bronuts’ (a decadent brioche filled with custard & jam), irresistibly flaky croissants made with pure NZ butter, or fraginpane tarts with seasonal fruits.
Waiheke is also going to miss Patrick’s special recipe ciabatta buns. Ringawera maintains a host of traditions from it’s past on the Island. For example, you can try ordering a coffee in Te Reo Maori by following the signs. A passion for food is the basis of the Cafe’s friendly staff culture.
Future plans for the Cafe include reinvigorating the menu and wine list. The brunch & lunch menu is still available including pizzas, fresh cabinet food, salads and burgers. Gluten-free options including polenta chips are available.
Other ideas for the future include collaboration with the artisans at the pottery to create serve-ware for the Cafe, and live weekend entertainment by Patrick’s band. But evolution takes time. and Patrick is discerning about how he builds the Cafe on the rich legacy that is Morris & James. Respectful of the past but with a much-needed new twist.
If you haven’t visited Morris & James in a while, pop in to visit the collective of artisans, not just at the pottery, but also the kitchen. Enjoy something delightful from Patrick’s Ringawera cafe, and you might find some newly designed ceramics to adorn your house and home.
It’s an early 5am start for Patrick, but the cafe is open 7-days a week from 9am - 4pm.
