Design Musings from the Workshop

At Morris & James, we’ve always taken pride in something a little paradoxical - creating unique handmade pottery that feels, well, predictable. Not in a dull or uniform way - each piece is still shaped and glazed by hand - but in the sense that what you fall in love with is what you can expect to take home. That’s the essence of our production range, and it’s a kind of magic we’ve spent years refining.

As a team, we’re always asking ourselves how to stay creative, relevant, and true to the Morris & James spirit - while still evolving. It’s a delicate balance, especially when we’re catering to so many different tastes. Some of you love our bold, joyful glazes. Others are drawn to more understated, earthy tones.

We have some new designs coming through that hero the terracotta clay, using a limited, sunbaked palette inspired by timeless Mediterranean style. These are being championed by our Marketing Manager who after a decade of listening and a lifetime of pottery has rolled up her sleeves to create some pieces that honour our original freehand aesthetic. With creative constraints comes new freedom - and we hope this emerging range of neutrals becomes a favourite. Expect beauty in simplicity, with just the right amount of surprise.
