Morris & James
The Creative Zone

Competition rules.

The rules for the Creative Zone monthly competitions: who can enter, how entries and photos work, how judging runs, and the prizes. For how it all fits together, see the Family Series page.

Rules as at 23 October 2026

01

Who can enter

  1. The competitions are for Family Series makers. Entry comes with the pack, and the private entry link is in the box.
  2. Any age, 5 and up. There are no age categories: everyone is judged together, and the judges take each maker’s age into account.
  3. Grown-ups can help, and can enter their own pieces too. Say who made it when you enter.
  4. One pack gives up to three entries, one for each activity. Buy another pack for more.
02

Entries

  1. Enter any activity from your pack, finished, baked and varnished.
  2. Every unique design has one entry. Make the same model again and the new piece can be entered as a new entry.
  3. Enter any month you like, and more than one entry in a month is fine.
  4. Entries are made with the private link from your pack. Entries by email, post or social media are not counted.
03

Photos

  1. Five photos of the piece on a plain background: front, back, both sides and from above.
  2. A sixth photo taken in the dark is welcome for the Glow award.
  3. A phone photo is plenty. Good daylight, no filters.
  4. Photos should show the piece only, not the maker.
04

Rounds and timing

  1. Each round runs for a calendar month. Entries received by the last day of the month go into that round.
  2. Judging happens in the first week of the following month. The first judging round is Thursday 8 January 2027.
  3. Entries open December 2026. There is no closing date for the competitions while the Creative Zone runs.
  4. Winners are announced on the Monthly Entries page and by email in the week after judging.
05

Judging

  1. Every entry is judged by a panel: past staff of Morris & James Pottery, Amanda Penton, head Klay Master tutor, and occasionally a guest potter.
  2. Each entry can win once per round, and one maker can win more than one category.
  3. The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence is entered into about results.
06

The five awards

  1. Technical skill. Accuracy and technique: smooth shapes and well moulded joins.
  2. Creativity. Your own flavour: extra details and a fresh twist on the model.
  3. Best story. Up to 600 words about the piece: a name, a personality, a quest.
  4. Glow award. Best use of the Nightglow clay.
  5. Wild card. The spot prize for the one that made the judges smile. First-timers and little makers have every chance here.
07

Prizes

  1. Each monthly winner is posted a small bronze Morris & James emblem, with a magnet for the fridge. Five are posted every month, one per category.
  2. Anyone who completes three activities, from one pack or several, is posted a Finisher Magnet, a flat fridge magnet with a rosette design. No judging: finishing is the achievement. One Finisher Magnet per three completed activities, and the design changes often, so they become collectable through the year.
  3. Prizes are posted separately from the pack, with free NZ postage. They cannot be exchanged for cash or other goods.
08

Your photos and privacy

  1. By entering, you give Morris & James and Klay Master permission to show the photos of your piece on the Morris & James website, in the Mail Club and on social media, with the maker’s first name and age if you have given them.
  2. We never show photos of children. Photos should be of the piece only.
  3. Your details are used to run the competitions and post prizes, and are handled under the Morris & James privacy policy.
09

General

  1. The competitions are run by Morris & James in collaboration with Klay Master.
  2. Entries that do not follow these rules, or are not the entrant’s own work, may be set aside.
  3. Morris & James may update these rules or pause a round if needed. Any change is posted on this page.
  4. Questions: email marketing@morrisandjames.co.nz.
